The CONGLASS CEILIDH BAND plays traditional music in a modern style. Its melody line of twin flutes and fiddles can give its arrangements either a light and airy feel or a driving force while its guitar and bass rhythm section provides a rock solid beat for classic ceilidh dances.

The band is used to playing for experienced and for novice audiences and can 'call' all its dances, from the simple Canadian Barn Dance to the back- bending Waves of Torry.

The band come from a variety of backgrounds. Gillian Leonard is a classically trained professional flautist who came to Inverurie from Tarland via music school in California. Dan Thorpe, on fiddle, is a talented young man who plays with the band during breaks from the Scottish traditional music school in Plockton. Also on fiddle and classically trained is Rachel Mackison from Turriff. Derek Slater, flautist, music arranger and caller, began his public playing career in the Bon Accord Silver Band. The steady dance beat comes from Phil Kammer of Tarves on bass and Steve Bruce of Daviot on guitar.

Much of the band's repertoire is Scottish and traditional - My Love She's But a Lassie, The Dashing White Sergeant, The Duke of Perth, Corn Riggs, Peat Fire Flame, The 72nd Highlanders' Farewell - but it also features less well-known Irish and Canadian tunes. The work of Chris Norman, the Nova Scotian flute-player, figures prominently.

As the CONGLASS CEILIDH BAND's melody players are trained musicians, customers requests for particular pieces of music can be readily accommodated. If there are particular tunes you want to hear, just let us know when you book us and we will try to work in an arrangement.
